May 3, 20251 yr Hi, Per title, i am about to swap the CPU on my Unraid server. Currently it has Xeon 2680 v4 having 14c/28t. I assigned the first four cores to Unraid and the last remaining ten to my VMs. One of those VMs is Windows 10 that i use to stream games that i assign 8 cores exclusively. I experience a bit of stutter occasionally and would like to see if overclocked Xeon 1680 v3 will help. 1680 v3 only has 8c/16t. As you can see, the new CPU doesn't have enough cores and i have to redistribute them. What is the procedure to ensure smooth swap? Edit: I plan to assign all 8c/16t to both Unraid and VM. As in, there is no longer dedicated core to the VM nor Unraid. Edited May 3, 20251 yr by ballpencil
May 4, 20251 yr Unraid normally only runs on 1 core, so you shouldn't have that many issues. The single-core speed of the 1680 is a lot faster, so you'll see a big improvement there. The memory-speed is slower, but in reality that doesn't make a lot of difference. Potential problems, the TDP is higher, most boards support up to 145W so it shouldn't be an issue, but make sure to check that. As for swapping, for Unraid, disable autostart of the VM's, and if cores are assigned, make sure they match what the new CPU has (I'd assign a single core to each VM from 1-7 so unraid has 0). You can of course already assign the proper number of vCPUs on unraid 7 but might as well wait to make sure everything works. After that, swap CPU's, and start it up again and it should work, you can then assign cores if you want to and start the VM's and verify they work one at a time. Nothing else should be required.
