May 6, 20251 yr I am looking into buying a chassis to build an unraid box. I currently use synology but with the upcoming changes to the newer + models, I thought I would look into another solution for my home. https://www.ebay.com/itm/146109299845?_skw=unraid+server&itmmeta=01JTKB1V57HEF9CWTZX6QZJ3H2&hash=item2204cafc85:g:A8EAAOSwizhk74uk&itmprp=enc%3AAQAKAAAA8FkggFvd1GGDu0w3yXCmi1eYgY0jHZB54o%2F4RS%2FMgBXlqGMgclCoTDT0PgyYmaFRkcqTpedgUDe71oiSUSq%2FgGb%2BWgOL%2Fitj7e31WOC1aL0qdWAr4n1elqBlpsJDYdU65RKCSD6cZQE2AbM8GqQ5gKK1uyOEyjapLEYf8MAi4A5r%2BOyetRtjIrPRuu3yU%2FmXfPTAMITvP1AZYxubrjuWIcJuPQNPADaTEIrXbDpSbbKvYZl1%2BZB17USRYXi5OWcmk3vbd333LqJNg2%2B%2FnPJeqKqtV6myPYGGluYd35Cbe1YM%2BTORAsVlQDIqXLTrA%2BXooQ%3D%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR-Kyh-vUZQ Does this look to be a good solution? I realize its large, but is this basically a plug and play chassis, as in add my harddrives and buy my unraid license?
May 6, 20251 yr I made the mistake of buying a SuperMicro CSE-847 SuperChassis SAS2/SATA2 6Gbps 45-bay 4U JBOD without realizing its fans do not slow down from their ultrahyper and loud noise. From what I could read, IPMI was not on that, so the fans wouldn't adjust to anything but the highest speed setting. You can hear the noise 2 stories away! That listing you have lists that it has it, so I wouldn't worry about noise then: Motherboard: X9DRD-7LN4F-JBOD with Integrated IPMI 2.0 Management Specs are up to you, but that's an awfully powerful machine which is good for VMs or serving media to external people, otherwise overkill on CPUs (electricity costs) and RAM. For my main server, I have a DDR3 16 GB 8 core with about 15 containers, 0 VMs, and 2 local media devices runs fine. The old norco case I bought 10 y ago though was probably $400 and unserviceable now, and the supermicro servers are really nice to work on. My only worry is once something dies (like a CPU or PSU for example) how to get a cheap Supermicro brand replacement part.
