May 28, 20251 yr Hi,i'm running (not mission critical) a large unRAID 7.1.2 media server (+ appx. 20 docker containers) for years now. The docker containers lived in a simple btrfs-cache pool (2x1 TB NVME.SSDs), which were RAID1 first (= 1TB), then RAID0 (meaning 2 TB) and now RAID1 again (because i transfered the normal cache activities to a plain 2 TB SSD).After i experienced now, how fast it is to restore the dockers from a backup to a new cache/pool, i'm asking myself, if a simple NVME cache drive without any redundancy would not be better and faster than this pool hassle. Also there is no write overhead (like in a RAID1 configuration) and the setup is way easier and error free. The restore time for about 20 dockers including data is below 1 hour from the moment on, when i change the cache drive. This seems to be acceptable for me or am i missing something? What do you think and what is your practice with this topic?
May 28, 20251 yr Community Expert Solution I think that there is no "correct" answer for this as it depends on personal preference. The main thing in either case is to make sure you have a backup of the 'appdata' share for containers working data, and the flash drive which has the templates for reinstalling applications with settings intact.
