August 12, 2025Aug 12 Currently have an i5 9500 paired with a GTX 1080. I use it for the usual set of dockers, plex and so on as well as a gaming VM. I like the low idle power usage and the intel quick sync for transcoding with Plex....but I would like to upgrade...AMD though always had issues in that the main CPUs don't have any GPU component. Are the AMD APU processors worth considering here or are they a lot worse than the normal AMD CPUs?Currently been looking at CPUs like the 12600K or thereabouts (14400ish?). I would like DDR5 and PCIe 4 for a general performance boost and longevity but don't want to spend a fortune. I would also quite like low idle power usage as well, my current HP elitedesk with GTX 1080 idles at about 15-20w overnight.Am I trying to solve this problem in the wrong way? should I just split the machine in two and keep the current box as unraid and have a separate small gaming/bazzite box for the occasional gaming I do (there is just something so attractive about an all-in-one super server which does all the things...)
August 13, 2025Aug 13 I am in a very similar boat.I have been eyeing up the Ultra 7 265k as its 20 cores and has QSV so you wouldnt need a additional gpu working on plex. I was pricing things out at MicroCenter and the pricing isnt terrible between a 14th gen and the 15th Gen. I think AMD is fine, but the price per dollar is favoring intel at the moment.
