August 16, 2025Aug 16 Files are missing from a data share folder. I still have a backup of some of the files that were in this folder. When I try to copy those files from the backup to the folder in question, I get a message that the files already exist. This would mean that the files are there, just not visible. Does anyone know how I can fix this?
August 22, 2025Aug 22 Author Thanks. I have uploaded the diagnostics file. tower3620-diagnostics-20250822-0827.zip
August 22, 2025Aug 22 Community Expert Nothing obvious that I can see. What is the share name? Also post the output from ls -la /mnt/user
August 22, 2025Aug 22 Community Expert That looks normal, are the files missing if you browse the share locally, or only over SMB for example?
August 22, 2025Aug 22 Community Expert That doesn't make much sense if it's then asking to overwrite the file, can you post an example?
August 22, 2025Aug 22 Author No it doesn't make sense. Unfortunately, I can not post an example, because I've restored all the files I still had backed up (iCloud). I've now lost the files I don't have a backup of.
August 22, 2025Aug 22 Community Expert So all the files you restored from the backup asked to overwrite? Are you sure the files are not hidden? When this first happened, did you notice more free space than expected?
August 22, 2025Aug 22 Author I am sure they are not hidden. I ran 'ls -all' but there were no files listed. I didn't pay attention to the disk space, so I don't know
August 22, 2025Aug 22 Community Expert Sorry, no more ideas. Still don't understand how missing files could ask to overwrite. If the files were really deleted; typically this is the result of a server being hacked while it's facing the internet, or some media related container/app doing some cleanups.
