Disk disabled - is the hdd dying?

Featured Replies

Hello,

Disk 1 has been disabled again — this is the second time within roughly three weeks.

This drive is installed in an 8-disk hot-swap cage. The last time it was disabled, I moved it to a different slot in the same cage and ran a new configuration. So far, none of the other drives in the cage have had this issue.

Does this point to the drive itself failing and needing replacement, or could it still be a connection problem? I’m skeptical of a connection issue since it’s secured inside a drive cage, but I’d greatly appreciate your insights—whether that’s steps I can take to further check the drive, or confirmation that replacement is the best option.

Thank you.

It's not logged as a disk problem, and the disk dropped offline, this is typically a power connection issue. Replace cables, both power and SATA, especially if using splitters, and try again.

Hello. This disk is housed in a cage connected via 2x SFF-8643 cables and 2x Molex connectors for power. It’s the only drive that has dropped offline, and this has happened twice in a row, while all other drives remain unaffected.

Could this simply be a coincidence where power loss affected the same disk twice, or is there a possibility that the cage itself is failing in a way that makes this particular disk the most likely to be cut off?

Try swapping slots/postion in that cage with the different disk and see where the problem follows.

Hello, I swapped this disk into a different position last time it was disabled. The cage has 2 PCBs each control 4 disks, I also moved this disabled drive into the slot of the other PCB. and it's roughly one/two weeks after that swap, it disabled again. So that is where my fear come from. A reboot and re-connect cables do bring the drive online, but it is scary for me in this situation. Not sure if it helps, I attached the smart (this is after the reboot and re-config)

Thank you.

If you swapped positions and the issue followed the disk, it suggests the disk is the problem, despite the healthy SMART, note that SMART doesn't catch every type of issue.

Thank you for confirming that perspective. That makes sense. I appreciate the clarification, and I’ll move forward with preparing a replacement drive (just in case).
