(6.9.2) "Array has 1 disk with read errors" during parity check - what do I do?

Featured Replies

Hi

My server is currently running its monthly parity check and is showing an "Array has 1 disk with read errors" warning

I have never seen this before and am rather lost as to what exactly this means. I've tried looking it up and I didn't really understand.

Can someone please help me figure out if I have an actual problem and exactly what it is I need to do next?

Disk 5 seems to be the offending disk.

Thanks

It's logged as a disk problem, run an extended SMART test on that disk.

P.S. you are using a very old release, recommend updating.

run that after the parity check has finished I presume? And then add the result here?

I know it is a very old version, and I kinda want to update - but I break every computer I touch when I upgrade things and I am scared I won't have a hope in hell of fixing Unraid if it goes as wrong as everything else normally does. I've looked into the issues people have had between 6.9 and 6.12 and I did not understand a word of it :-/

It's a problem and I don't really know what to do about it

I would cancel the parity check and run the SMART test first.

It says "completed without error" in the UI
I presume you poke the "download report" button for the results (whatever that gives is attached) or does that go somewhere else?

SMART test passed, so the disk is OK for now, but keep an eye on it, it may fail again in the future. Run the parity check now to see if it also completes without new errors. Also, monitor these attributes; if they keep increasing, you will likely get more errors:

ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAGS VALUE WORST THRESH FAIL RAW_VALUE
  1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate POSR-K 200 200 051 - 118
200 Multi_Zone_Error_Rate ---R-- 200 200 000 - 2

OK. Thanks

Do you have any suggestions or tips for giving an attempt at an upgrade the best possible chance of not going horribly wrong?

Create a full flash drive backup before updating, and also recommend reading the release notes for all the major releases in between, 6.10.0, 6.11.0, etc

I backup flash and dockers often.

I have attempted to read the notes - and this is partly why I have not upgraded. I only understood about 5% of it. And when I attempted to look at the threads where people had fixed issues I ended up even more confused :-/

Is it likely to go so badly wrong that it cannot be fixed? Or is is probable that someone who knows what they are doing will be able to help fix it?

Nope, worst case you should be able to revert to the backup.
