November 12, 2025Nov 12 Hey guys,my new UNRAID server is my old gaming server (AMP Server) + some HDD slots ;) Everything works just fine. I am looking for a way to use the CPU power I have, so I started to convert some of my media to H.266 mp4 files. This took some serious time on my PC, so I used my Windows VM on the Unraid server to do so...but this feels like it´s not the best solution. I found some converting docker apps, but none of them supports H.266. Is there any possibility to use ffmpeg to convert movies without using that windows encoder tools inside a Windows VM? It´s not the worst solution as I have that Windows VM running 24/7 and I already have the tools and are working with them......but I´m interrested if there´s some more integrated solution for this. Thx

November 12, 2025Nov 12 Author sorry for that and thanks for moving....I was checking all sections twice but still choosed the wrong one :(
November 12, 2025Nov 12 Last I checked you would need to build a special FFMPEG with VVC (H.266) encoding enabled as per documentation here, it's still a very, very new codec and is extremely poorly supported.AV1 is better at the moment if you want to churn some CPU cycles for something you can actually play back, HEVC is almost as good and much more widely compatable. look at applications like Fileflows, Unmanic or Tdarr to automate those processes on your server.
