May 30, 201214 yr --because AFP just isn't working right for me on Snow Leopard... way too slow. NFS is very fast and so far so good.. BUt i've read that people are having problems here with NFS and unRaid.. I wonder if those problems ahve been worked out in rc3? Getting a bit frustrated. Also the limited security model is concerning me. User security on a share level only isn't good enough.. I'd like to use standard unix file security--user/group/other. (I miss Novell Netware 3.11 -- permissions model on that was many tiems better than ACL on windows NT and more flexible than unix system security... I haven't seen as good file security management since)
May 30, 201214 yr Why not use SMB? Under 10.7 SMB is far faster. AFP is dying, seems like Apple is pushing towards SMB in a big way. I use AFP because of TimeMachine. As soon as it supports SMB I'll be using that instead.
May 30, 201214 yr The NFS issues seem to be fairly specific to certain configurations - I'd suggest if it works for you, then continue to use it. Ultimately though, an upgrade to 10.7 might be possible? (unless it's a hackintosh, in which case it may be that it's not Snow Leopard at all that's causing you issues!) Re: security, user share level is what's there because it's enough for us home users. There's always Active Directory integration if you really want to go nuts
May 31, 201214 yr The key issue with nfs under 5 seems to be when using user shares. If you're nfs mounting direct to disk exports then you'll probably be ok.
May 31, 201214 yr Author I upgraded my client to Lion and the AFP performance improved, so I'll just stick with AFP for now--until I have more problems lol.
