System Fan

Featured Replies

Hi,

Sorry newbie question. I've just installed UnRaid for the first time (v4.7). It seems like its exactly what I've been looking for. However the problem I'm having is with the system fan, it seems to be on full speed all of the time. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-D525TUD. Do anyone know if there is a setting, driver, etc that I'm missing?

Thanks

Some fans are temp controlled. If it has at least three pins (IIRC) and plugs into the motherboard, then the board can control the fan speed. If it's just plugged into a molex connector, then it's controlled entirely via the voltage it receives. You can control it by reducing the voltage to the fan.

Hi,

The fans plugged into the motherboard (3 pin connector). I've had Windows 7 on the system before and its been fine with them which is why I'm thinking its something to do with a driver?

I've just tried booting into windows 7 again and its still at nearly 2400rpm. I'm sure it never used to be like this so I'm beginning to wonder if something's gone wrong on the motherboard  :(

Most motherboards these days have fan adjustable settings in the bios. Either individual fan adjustments on higher end bios, or something more simple like "cool and quiet" labels which keep the fans ramped down unless needed. Check your bios for available settings and see if anything applies.

Many motherboards will not let you mix PWM and non-PWM fans on the board.

for example, If you had several fans with PWM working then plug in a non-pwm fan, PWM stops working.

Probably to protect the fan.
