Feature Request: Custom VM Icons via GUI (Persistent & User-Defined)

Featured Replies

Hi Unraid Team,

I would like to submit a feature request regarding VM icon management in Unraid.

Currently, VM icons can only be selected from predefined system directories, and custom icons require either:

• Placing files inside system-managed folders that may be overwritten
• Manually editing VM XML metadata
• Overriding built-in template icons

This differs significantly from the Docker implementation, where users can easily define custom icons directly in the GUI.

Requested Improvement:

Please add native support for custom VM icons through the GUI, similar to Docker containers. Ideally one or more of the following options:

  1. Allow selecting a PNG file from a user-defined folder (e.g. /mnt/user/...)

  2. Allow uploading a custom icon directly in the VM edit interface

  3. Allow specifying an icon via URL

  4. Provide a persistent, user-safe icon directory that is not overwritten during updates

Rationale:

• VM icons should not require XML editing for customization
• Users should not need to override system files
• Icons should persist across reboots and updates
• The experience should be consistent with Docker container management

Having to “host” custom VM icons or manipulate system folders feels unnecessarily complex for what should be a simple UI-level customization.

Thank you for considering this improvement.
