Unable to move things off of cache device so I can format it

Featured Replies

Hi all I am a beginner when it comes to Unraid and I have tried to search for a solution with not much progress. My cache drive has errors and seems to be preventing my docker service from starting, so I would like to move everything to the array, format it, and see if that will help. I currently have all my shares set to array only, but when I invoke the mover nothing seems to be happening to my cache drive. Any ideas of what steps I need to take? Is my cache drive busted beyond repair?

When you change a share to be array only it does not cause any existing files to be moved as that setting is only used for new files.

One option is to manually move files. For this you could use Unraid’s built-in file manager or a file manager of your choice.

Another option is to let the mover application built into Unraid do this. For this to happen you need to set a share up with Primary Storage=cache; Secondary. Storage=array; mover direction=cache-.array.

In both cases you should have the docker and vm services disabled while ding ‘tis as they hold files open which stops them being moved.

I would like to let the mover do it, could I just set the appdata and system shares to primary storage=cache, secondary=array? And then invoke the mover?

Yes, make sure you set the mover direction correctly as well.

Note if there are lots of small files then mover will be slower than moving the t hem manually.

Wow you're not kidding it moving pretty slow. I'm guessing I cannot stop the mover now that it's started?

Edit: figured it out, in terminal the command mover stop did it
