What hard drives are in this external?

I would suspect that opening the enclosure voids the warranty.

Are they 3TB Western Digital Green EZRX? Do you still have warranty with using the drive internally (even if you dont keep the case)?

This is the cheapest 3TB with 2 year + warranty right now. I figure I could just buy 3-4 of these and remove the drives.

BestBuy has been having the retail-box external 3TB Seagate Barracuda (SKU 3371132) for between $179 and $159 (sale) -- and I've spent the SMALL (IMHO) premium because it's a 5-year warranty.  Non-retail box external drives (eg, like OEM from NewEgg) are now between 12 and 24 month warranties.

When I bought one of those last September it was an EZRX.

Whether the warranty will still be valid once removed is the big question. When you remove a Seagate drive and check the warranty on their website it knows it's from an external drive and says there is no warranty. However when I checked the WD 3TB on the WD website it says it has a valid 2 year warranty. I'm not aware, however, of anyone trying to send in a drive they took from an external in for warranty service so I don't know for sure whether they will honor it or not.
