How Do I Add Drives?

Featured Replies

I just updated to 5 RC4.  No hitches at all so far.  But one question, I added a couple of drives and I don't see where you can see/manage them?  All the old drives are up and healthy.  Reading the manual it appears they should auto-detect, format then mount.  I know clearing/formatting can take some time, but should the new drives show up right away with some status indicator?  Or nothing until clearing/formatting is complete?

If automatic and you just have to wait, then I think a useful feature request would be to show the new drives and the status of the clearing etc.  If that should already be happening, I obviously need to do something to get them to show up.  I am open to suggestions since they are all on the same ePCI SATA card, I can't imagine what to do though?  I know the card connection is working as I could see them all through in Windows (stupidly stuck in an old Windows C: drive  :-[)

Stop the array then you can assign drives by using the pull-downs on the main page.

I don't know any unRAID users not using a preclear script. I really suggest using this to preclear your drives outside of the array, before adding them. It will do a complete read pass, then a complete write pass, then set up the partition, then do another complete read pass. The process can take a day or two per drive, but you can check SMART afterwards and make sure there are no errors before adding it to the array. After this is done, you can add the drive to the server instantly (you may have to click format, but the drive will work a few seconds later) which makes this method MUCH safer than just adding a brand new drive to the system.
