Memory allocation

Featured Replies

Thanks firstly to anyone that is taking the time to read this.

I have 18gb of ram in my new unraid box (bios sees 18gb) 3x 4gb stick in one channel and 3x2gb sticks in second channel, i am running beta 5 rc5 and for some reason the system will only read 2gb usable.

My old box had 8gb and it saw it fine so i'm not sure what is going on with this new hardware build.

my system log is attached if this helps to figure out what is going on.

Cheers

Will

Two suggestions...

Try just removing 2GB to see if that makes a difference.  I am not aware of a 16GB limit, but maybe...

If that doesn't work, try populating both channels identically, so 4GB + 2GB in each channel.  You'd lose 6GB, but some CPUs prefer identical populations in each channel.

Thanks for your reply,

This was my gaming rig for a couple of months or so  and the 18gb under windows was working fine.

I have a GA-EX58-EXTREME motherboard http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2957#sp

next chance I get i'll reboot and run memtest to see what happens.

Thanks

Will

That should perhaps have been my first suggestion...  ;)

I have not often seen memory go bad, but Memtest found it.  Also, just check that the BIOS voltage and timing settings are still valid.  It's possible that they still allow BIOS to see the memory but that the settings may have accidentally got messed up.
