First time build - want to check before I pull the trigger

Featured Replies

Hi all,

New to the unRaid world... been a member/lurker for a while but never had the money nor the time to actually build an unRaid server of my own until now. Building a computer is something I've wanted to do for a while, and it just so happens that my data collection is getting a little crazy... my googling brought me here and unRaid looks like it'll be perfect for my needs.

I'm doing this on a semi-tight budget - don't really want to spend more than $400 (yay for being a broke graduate student), but I do have a bunch of credit at Amazon that I will be using to offset the cost of at least some of the parts.

Right now I have about 2.7 TB of data that needs to be put under some kind of protection, and I don't really see that number growing very fast, but I'm giving myself room for some expandability. I plan on running sabnzbd, couchpotato, sickbeard, as well as Plex... so hopefully the CPU I picked is powerful enough for that stuff.

Anyway, I wanted you experts to take a look at my parts list and let me know if there's anything glaring I need to fix (I'm a total noob, and picking out parts was overwhelming to say the least!)

CPU - AMD Sempron 145 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103888

MOBO - ASUS M5A78L-M LX PLUS - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131795

RAM -  1x4GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145346 - I picked this RAM kind of at random so if you have a better suggestion at around the same price, let me know...

PSU - Corsair Builder CX500 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027 - this should be plenty of power for 6 drives at least, right? The mobo has 6 SATA ports and I don't really plan on expanding beyond six 2TB or 3TB drives for a long while (including the parity). If I need more or less power, please comment.

CASE - Antec Three Hundred http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042 - don't really care about looks, just wanted a cheap-ish (but good quality) case

To start off I'll be getting 2x3TB (green) drives, one for parity and one for data, along with using a couple of 2 TB drives I already have at home. I also already have a flash drive I can use. Let me know if I missed anything, though. I'll be starting with the free license of unRaid and if all works out well, I'll upgrade to plus or maybe pro, depending on my usage...

Thanks a million for your help, and I look forward to your responses. I'm getting excited to start on this project! Also, poke me if anything was unclear and I'll try to answer your questions as best as I can.

Hi-

I am by no means anything remotely resembling an expert, so hopefully some smarter people than me will jump in.  Couple of things to remember...  First, make sure you have a brand name USB thumb drive.  There are some black listed thumb drives:

    Lacie MosKeyto

    Delock USB2.0 Nano Memory stick

    Maxell ONYX

    There may be others.

I think that proc should be for the most part ok for what you want to do, and 4 GB is a good starting point for memory.  Keep in mind that you may want to think about adding more memory eventually.

Also, not sure if your drives are green or not, but its something to think about.

And also keep in mind that once you start, you will become addicted and will want to continually mess with your unraid server.  Adding drives, more apps, etc.  At least, thats been my experience.

Welcome, and good luck.

Looks good as far as compatibility.

I'd suggest this case for when you catch the bug to expand further...

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811103030

It has been as low as $45.

I got the Azza 910 for $45, see they have upped their prices since then. :(

Also one of Raj's recommended boards is $44.99 (including $20 mail in rebate) (only 5 on-board slots..but plenty of expansion slots)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135272

Both will allow up to (3) 5x3 drive cages.  Both include a 4x3 cage.

You'll catch UCD and want trayless cages once you get the bug and some extra cash.

I like your choice in memory, start with a single stick of 4GB...you can always add another.

Enjoy!

Thanks, both of you for your input!

mbryanr, I'll take a look at that board ... thanks for the heads up!

These cases also look good, but a little more than I want to spend right now so I will keep them in mind for the future expansion you guys seem to think is inevitable ;) Hopefully I won't get bit by the bug too badly within the next few months, because my life is a bit in transition at the moment (finishing my degree & moving across several states soon).

Thanks again! Hoping to buy the parts before the end of the day.
