Wake on LAN / Power Save Options?

Featured Replies

Greetings all...

I would like to have my unRAID Server turn off or sleep every night after 1:00 AM (unless in-use) and turn back on by 11:00 AM.  IS this possible?

My Motherboard is a SUPERMICRO MBD-X8SIL-F-O

Thank you for any advice/help...

Simplest solution would be using Simplefeatures which has also rich features regarding sleep modes with exclude hours, but first i would try if the server wakes up by WOL.

How can we do a simple test for WOL ? I'm interested too :)

The link I provided above is the wiki page listed by SimpleFeatures main page, next to its Sleep button. It tells what to look for to see if your hardware is compatible (BIOS settings to check, etc...), a place to download a WOL program, how to setup a batch files using the WOL program, and more.

Have you tried this? Did you get stuck somewhere along the way? Provide details to what you did & what happened if it was not what you expected...

I tried that method and everything is working except one thing :

with an ethtool eth0 this is my output :

        Supports Wake-on: pumbg

        Wake-on: d

Using ethtool -s eth0 wol g      everything is fine.

Two questions :

1 - What wake-on : d means ??

2 - How can i make the change permanent at every reboot of my unraid ?

Thanks a lot

I googled "Wake-on: d". The first result http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Wake_on_LAN answers your first question. d = disabled

In this case, the ethernet interface is WOL capable ("Supports Wake-on: g"), but this feature is disable ("Wake-on: d")

As for the second question... back to my posted link, on the wiki page is

If necessary, you can add the above line to your 'go' script, but I've not had a problem with my machine keeping the setting once it is set and the appropriate Wake on LAN setting is enabled in BIOS.

Yes i read your wiki, sorry to not being more specific :

- i tried a reboot but the wake-on : d    was set back after that

- what is the "go" script ? i just can add that command after the unraid boot ?

thanks a lot

The go script is on your UnRAID flash drive under the config directory.

From Windows, you can access it through \\tower\flash\config\go

From UnRAID command line, you can access it at /boot/config/go

Add the command "ethtool -s eth0 wol g" (without quotes) to the end of your go file.

Done thanks a lot !

Tomorrow i will test the WOL from my xbmc HTPC :)

One thing I wanted to mention about this schedule... if you are using a cache drive (if you don't use a cache drive, no need to change anything), the mover script is set to run daily at 3:40am. If your server is powered off during this time, the mover does not run. This would cause files to stay on your cache drive instead of moving to the parity protected portion of your data array, eventually filling the cache drive up.

Remember to reschedule the mover time to run while the server is powered up.

Dont know why you try experimenting with editing your go file. The problem with that might be that it will not be called after a wakeup (if i recall it right). That means if your LAN adapter set it's WOL setting to d after a Sleep/Wakeup cycle you might have a problem.

Simply install SimpleFeatures with the Sleep Addon, or at least look at it, because it also lets you set the desired WOL options after sleep. It hase a wide range of options regarding that.
