New NAS Build - Hardware Check Please :)

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm putting together a new build to run UnRAID on. I have decided on the following components. I would appreciate it if you could provide some feedback.

Case Antec Three Hundred http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX20934

Mobo MSI H77MA-G43 http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=69922&promoid=1261

Processor Intel i3 2120 3.30GHz http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX32498

Power Supply XFX 750W PRO750W XXX Edition http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=62224&promoid=1261

Memory GSKILLSniper Low Voltage Series 8GB PC3-12800 Dual Channe DDR3 http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX33415

USB Key Patriot Xporter XT Rage 8GB http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX29699

Hard Drives 1x WD Blue 500GB(Cache Drive) and 2x WD Red 3TB to start (One data, one parity. I will expand with more as $$$ permits)

I am looking for this to be central storage for all my PC's in my house. It will also house an XBMC database for at least two clients to connect back to. I will likely have tablet/phone streaming in the future. I am just maxing out my 1TB WD Black right now, so 3TB to start will be more than sufficient.

I hope I have provided enough information. I appreciate all feedback.

Thank You!

I see a bit of dichotomy in your selection of a case and power supply.  The case has definite limits on the number and arrangement of hard drives.  Your choice of power supplies on the other hand would allow for upwards of 20 hard drives.  When you are planning for that mumber of drives, you need to consider your options as to how to mount your hard drives.  You really don't want to have a case setup that requires you have to open it up to change or add a drive.  Plus, moving that many cables around is simply asking for trouble.

If the maximum number of drives is going to be less than seven, your case choice is workable.  But you should downsize your power supply to less than 500 watts.

If the maximum number of drives is going to be larger than ten, you should consider a case which has 5.25" bays top to bottom and use some type of drive cage--preferably one that allows you to change the drives without opening the case.  The Antec 900 or 1200 are examples of cases as is this one:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811103030

Hope this is helpful...

Thank you for your reply Frank.

To be honest, I don't think I would be going past 6 drives. I also do not mind having to open the case to swap/install new drives as it will be placed in an accessible location. I already own the case, I am building everything else around it.

Which PSU's would you suggest? Modular is preferred to reduce the number of cables. Would 500 watts or less cater to 6-7 HDD's?

If you already have a case, I certainly wouldn't buy another one unless that case was completely unsuitable.  The Antec 300 is a very nice case if you will be using only 6 or seven drives.  When you get too many drives in any case, it is so easy to add up with a real rat's nest of wires...

I would suggest that you take a look through The Power Supply Thread:

It has all of the information you are seeking in the first few posts.

Thanks again Frank. I ended up going with the Antec Neo Eco 450. Sucks that it isn't modular but for $35, the price was right.
