Preclear.sh - No progress?

Featured Replies

I've recently build a small machine that I use for all kinds of different test purposes...

So when I got 2 WDC Black Drives, i thought that I would use the machine to preclear them, so i wouldn't have to open up my unraid server...

Problem is, when I load unraid and start preclearing sda and sdb (from 2 different tty's on the machine... No telnet or anything) it doesn't progress (haven't atleast now for the last 15 minutes)...

Could it be because the Intel Pentium D 2.8GHz (Dual Core, 2 threads no hyperthreading) doesn't allow me to run 2 preclear sessions?

Or do you have any other ideas?

Well... not sure what you call no progress.. Don't know how large your drives are but preclearing a 3TB can take 30 hours... 15 minutes is not much... But if you are only so fresh started, just break the sessions of and try again with one...

You should be able to run several sessions in parallel though..

They are probably not running.

Type

top

at a command prompt.  You should be able to see the "dd" commands running.

If not, they probably stopped when you disconnected your terminal session.

I didn't disconnect the sessions, they are still running...

Now, after running a couple of hours one of the drives have progressed 2% pre-read (41,126,400,000 out of 2 TB) and the other drive 0% (3,290,112,000) out of 2 TB), both started with a few seconds in between.

Last time I precleared a 2TB drive, it was way faster...

Guess both drives are dead or in near-dead condition :P

you can check in the syslog for any errors.

(That would slow you down if the disk controllers were constantly being reset)

Otherwise, as you said, there is probably contention on the disk controller involved.

I would have expected further results in a few hours time though.    Perhaps you have the disk controller in a legacy mode and the disks are not being addressed in native SATA mode.  (I doubt that, since they are showing as /dev/sdX rather than /dev/hdX devices)

Or, the disks are"nearly dead".    Perhaps you can use them in a Windows PC.  You might not notice the lack of performance there.  ;)

Yah might just put it in the lady's computer... She wouldn't notice it  8)

I did try to run Spin Rite on one of them, and it failed due to a "uncorrectable error" or something like that...

I guess they are dead... Might try test them individually before disgarding them though.

There is your answer right there ...
