HELP - Cannot get array parity check to complete

Featured Replies

I am new to unRAID.  I am building my first unRAID server.  I bought 4  2TB hard drives.  I Install all four hard drives.  When I webt to set up the array I got the red ball on the parity drive.  I tried other positions in the array and different wiring.  Still could not get array to get through parity chec.

I pulled the drive to test it.  I could not get to initialize regardless of what I did.  I got an RMA and returned the drive.

Yesterday my replacement drive arrived and I put it in the array as the parity drive and started the sync process.  Last night when I went to bed it was still running through the process.  No errors everything seem to be doing fine.  This morning when I checked the system I saw the dreaded red ball by the parity drive with 317 errors.

I find it hard to believe that I got 2 bad hard drive.  What do I do now?  Please Help

Did you preclear the drive?  Preclearing will find drives which are either bad or will fail early in their life.  It is unusual, but not that uncommon to have two of five drives defective when received or shortly there after.  Many reports by users indicate that 10 to 20 percent of all drives are defective when received.  Once you get a couple of hundred hours on any drive, it is quite likely to run for several years with any problem.  These early failures are called 'Infant Mortality'.

You also should include a syslog to assist those person who are much more knowledgeable in interpreting the log file.
