August 26, 201213 yr I just installed 2 additional WD Green 2TB hard drives, via a SuperMicro AOC-SASLP-MV8 SATA extension card. When I assign one or both of the new cards and then start the clearing process, it runs for a short bit and then the server locks up. The server is no longer available via network, and the server itself is unresponsive locally. Upon doing a hard re-start and beginning the process again, I have the same issue. If I un-assign the new cards and start the array back up without them, I have no problem accessing the server and all contents. I have attached a syslog and would greatly appreciate any assistance in this matter. Thank you in advance. Trevor syslog-2012-08-26.zip
August 26, 201213 yr Use the tail-telnet method to capture a syslog during a crash: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=9880.0
August 26, 201213 yr Author I set up the tail-telnet and assigned one of the drives and began the clear process. At 7% clear, it locked up and became unresponsive. I have attached the results of the tail-telnet. It shows no errors, just stopped at "clearing 7% complete". telnet-tail-2012-08-26.txt

September 3, 201213 yr Author Thanks for all your suggestions. It appears this issue was symptomatic of a bigger problem. I now get no video output at all when I start up my machine. As my processer is AMD with onboard video, would it be most likely that the processor is fried, or could this be the motherboard? Thanks
September 3, 201213 yr Thanks for all your suggestions. It appears this issue was symptomatic of a bigger problem. I now get no video output at all when I start up my machine. As my processer is AMD with onboard video, would it be most likely that the processor is fried, or could this be the motherboard? Thanks It could be the CPU, RAM, power supply, or MB. To troubleshoot, follow standard isolation techniques. Power Down, Re-seat the RAM. Do you get "beeps" from MB speaker if you boot with no RAM installed?
September 3, 201213 yr Author Turns out I don't have a speaker in my case. I just ordered one and will have to try this once it arrives. However, based off of the errors received, is there a component that seems most likely to have failed. In case it matters, the hard drives spin up when I turn the computer on.
September 11, 201213 yr Author I got the computer speaker, and turned the computer back on, and I got video output. Not sure why I get output all of the sudden. However, upon booting, it hangs at the same spot, after "Checking 'hlt' instruction...OK. I removed the expansion card, so the setup is the same as I've had for a while, which has had no problems. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have attached a couple images of the screen at hang up. Thank you.
September 11, 201213 yr if you have more than one stick of ram in the server remove one at a time to see if they are causing the problems.
September 11, 201213 yr Author I have two sticks and tried booting separately with each one, but the server froze at the same spot each time.
September 13, 201213 yr Author I tried a second flash with the free version, but it still just boots partially and freezes at the same spot. I'm really stuck here.
September 13, 201213 yr I tried a second flash with the free version, but it still just boots partially and freezes at the same spot. I'm really stuck here. Using an editor that DOES NOT put MS-DOS style carriage returns on the ends of lines, open up the syslinux.cfg file on the flash drive (It will probably be a hidden system file, so set your file explorer to show thosefiles), Then append no-hlt to the end of the "append" line as shown below, then reboot. The boot process will then skip the test of the "hlt" instruction not properly handled by some older AMD processors. This may result in a different error further into the boot process, but you'll be able to report back how it acts. default menu.c32 menu title Lime Technology LLC prompt 0 timeout 50 label unRAID OS menu default kernel bzimage append initrd=bzroot no-hlt label Memtest86+ kernel memtest
September 17, 201213 yr Author Thanks for the suggestions. I appended the "no-hlt" to my pro usb. It got past where it was sticking before, but ended up freezing elsewhere. I restarted it a few times, and it froze up somewhere different each time. After restarting 4 or 5 times, I got no video output at all, and no beeps. I got not beeps after booting with memory, either. After fooling around and seating/unseating memory and unplugging all hard drives, I got it to boot. However, it froze at "Booting Kernel". I restarted and it booted at the same spot. I switched out the USB for the free version, and that froze part way through the starting "bzroot" load, after several ".........". I shut down the computer and started it again, but once again I have no output or beeps. Could this be a problem with the mb? Thanks.

Have you run a memory test?
September 17, 201213 yr I have not. How can I test my memory if I can't boot up my machine? Do you get to the boot screen for unRAID... one of the choices is a memory test. If you can get to it, let it run for several cycles, preferably overnight. If you cannot get that far, at least check in the BIOS that the memory VOLTAGE, CLOCK-SPEED and TIMING are set as specified for your specific RAM strips. (Most BIOS get it right, but some do not, especially with premium RAM that takes special voltage or timing.) Every RAM strip is different. They each have their specific settings. Joe L.
September 17, 201213 yr Author Right now I get no video output at all, so I can't run the memtest. I'll keep trying to start the computer and run the test.

I'll keep trying to start the computer and run the test. re-seat the power supply connections to the MB try an alternate power supply. (don't need to hook it to all the disks, just need to connect it to the MB to see if you get video) Make sure you have both the CPU and main MB power connectors connected. re-seat the memory re-seat the CPU replace the MB.
