[SOLVED] Running IRC client (irssi) on UnRAID securely

Featured Replies

I would like to run an IRC-client on my UnRAID setup. Irssi seems to be the client to use as I would like eventually to setup a proxy based solution. I'm going to access the UnRAID only from the local network. I found this thread giving me the correct irssi and perl packages:

http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=6388.msg62275#msg62275

The packages install and run fine but the problem is that an IRC-client should not be run under root account. Some (all?) common irc servers deny connection when running under root. I have enabled "User Level" share settings and created a user for this purpose. However I cannot login with the new user name nor I cannot change to that user using the "su - username --shell=/usr/sbin/bash" command as suggested by some threads. The latter simply does not do anything. How would I run the IRC-client under a different user inside UnRAID?

Any assistance is well appreciated.

Repeat these commands in a telnet session and post the session.

Thank you for the answer. The problem was solved by switching completely to Skype Instant Messaging group discussions which has the "store-messages-when-offline" feature built-in. Highly recommended alternative to those groups seeking irc-like features but with less hassle.
