September 4, 201213 yr Hi there, So I'm trying to figure out if I can build a small unRAID server with the items on hand: 1-FIT-PC 1.0 (circa 2008 low wattage mini-PC. 40GB internal drive, 256mb ram, GigE ethernet, two USB 2 ports) 1-500 GB WD external drive with Firewire and USB2 ports 1-1TB external USB drive (empty) So, since the FIT only has two USB ports and unRAID is not installable to the internal drive I will have to use one of the two USB ports for the unRAID flash drive leaving me one left for both external drives. Can I use a hub/switch to connect the two drives? Will they mount that way? Will it be unusably slow? I'm resigned for the moment to setting a non-parity array since I would only have access to 1/3 of the space I have available. I mainly just want them on my network. So I will use both drives as striped or just separate volumes. That way I can: set up unRAID on the flash drive, add the empty 1TB drive, copy the media from the 500gb drive to the 1TB on the array, the add it to the unRAID setup as well and not have to completely lose all the data. I have built and used an unRAID server before with real full parity, 8TB setup but that stayed at my old office when I left. Now I just want to try it with this little pile of meager hardware on hand. Will it work? thanks!
September 5, 201213 yr I don't believe USB hard drives are supported as array devices. Correct, you cannot assign USB devices to the unRAID array. External-SATA devices yes, USB devices, NO. Joe L.
September 5, 201213 yr However, if you want to have the drives simply as storage, you can use SNAP to mount the USB drives, or the "Disk-Management" page in unMENU might do it for you, but it will not be under user-shares, and not parity protected, and it will be VERY SLOW. (the underlying reason USB drives are not permitted) Be VERY careful with either add-on, especially if the drives have existing content. The wrong command will re-partition or re-format them and destroy all your existing data. Joe L.
