Preclear a cache disk?

Featured Replies

I'm planning to add a cache disk to my 4.7 Plus system.

Does a cache disk get added like a data disk does, taking the array down while it's added in? Should I preclear the drive before adding it as a cache disk to avoid downtime?

I searched the forum and Wiki, but I couldn't find a clear answer.

No, the array is not taken off-line, the cache drive is not zeroed.  (It will be re-formatted though if not in unRAID format)

You should pre-clear it, but to ensure of its ability to be read and be written, not to prevent unRAID from zeroing it.

Thanks for the info and the quick response!

Caveat:  Unless it's a solid-state drive (SSD) used as a cache disk because pre-clearing a SSD will cause the SSD to fail prematurely (add unnecessary wear and tear), right Joe?

It will read every sector, possibly many times, but it writes each sector only once.

If your SSD cannot be read, you have issues. (As far as a I know, reads do not wear out an SSD drive.)

Writing the SAME sector constantly on an SSD wears it out.  If writing it once fails, you have even bigger issues.

I say it will do no harm, and might just detect an early failure before you trust your data on it.

Very good points.  Thank you.
