Red ball drive

Featured Replies

Hi all.  Got a red ball on one of my drives and attempted to run a smart test on it.  Smart test failed with the following:

smartctl 5.39.1 2010-01-28 r3054 [i486-slackware-linux-gnu] (local build)

Copyright © 2002-10 by Bruce Allen, http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net

Smartctl: Device Read Identity Failed (not an ATA/ATAPI device)

A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options.

In the forums, others have had this and it was recommended to check all connections.  I shut down and reseated everything.  Now I do get a smart test (output below).  It seems ok now.  Can someone please confirm that it appears the disk is ok and that I can bring it back on line using this process?:

    Stop the array.

Go to the Devices page and un-assign the disk.

Go to the main page and start the array.

    Stop the array again.

Go to the Devices page and re-assign the disk.

Go to the Main page - system should indicate there is a "new" drive to replace the disabled one. Check the confirmation box and click Start to start a parity-reconstruct of the disk.

root@KingNAS:~# smartctl  -a  -d  ata  /dev/sdc

Selective self-test flags (0x0):

After scanning selected spans, do NOT read-scan remainder of disk.

If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.

That is the process to get a disk back online.  (and it appears the re-seating of the cables fixed the issue since the first time you attempted to get a smart report the drive did not respond at all.)

Whatever you do, do NOT format it, do NOT set a new disk configuration...  Just un-assign, start array, stop array, re-assign.
