Boot Error

Featured Replies

First time setup with all new parts and I get a "boot error" message.  I set the USB device to load first, but it doesn't seem to work.  Any help?

Thanks,

Brian

I'd try another flash drive. I've tried a generic (Lexar), a Sony Micro Vault Tiny and a Kingston Data Traveler. No matter what I try, the Kingston fails with and error. The other drives boot fine. All three work fine as data drives.

The Wiki has some tips...

http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php?title=USB_Flash_Drive_Preparation

What motherboard?  What flash drive?  What BIOS options do you have enabled?

I don't want to sound negative, but what you basically asked was the equivalent of: I sat in my car, but it doesn't move.  What could be wrong?

"Boot error" usually indicates the motherboard did not find a bootable device.  It might be the USB drive is not the boot device, or the USB drive does not have a master boot record, or the partition with the boot record is not marked as active, or the BIOS on your motherboard does not know how to deal with the geometry of the flash drive, or you have the USB drive plugged into a USB socket that is not active.

A few more details, after you read and follow the tips in the wiki, might be in order.

I tried an Adata drive and still get a "boot error."  Can you recommend a drive to purchase that will work from NewEgg and I'll get one (assuming this is the problem).

That guide is different than the one on the website and it helped.  I got the drive to boot, but now it is asking for a "Tower Login:"  What do I do with that?  Should I just try to access the server from another computer's web browser now?

Thanks for your patience.

You might be out of gas, or the battery dead, or never turned the ignition key, or someone removed the engine, or the starter, or the car is upside down, or has no wheels.    ;D ;D ;D

Seriously, it is rare that a USB drive will not boot.  It might not have a serial number, but by use of the "-ma" option to syslinux, and/or the HP formatting tool, it has been a long time since I remember a flash drive that just said "boot error"  and could not be booted.

You can buy any flash drive you want, but the odds of you getting much more help, or getting it to boot will be slim, unless you tell us the steps you took to make the current flash drive bootable, and what flash drive and motherboard you are using, and how you have the options set.   Most of us are not mind readers.  (Only the most advanced class guru's can read minds)

Please, read the wiki link posted above, follow its steps.  It should get you working.  Describe in detail what you did to load unRAID on it and make it bootable.

While I was typing this, I see you followed the wiki and are now booted up.

You do not need to do anything with the Linux "Login" prompt at this point.  It is needed for specific non-standard customizations for advanced users, but not for day to day users.  All the configuration can be done from the unRAIDweb-interface.  Type http://tower/ in your browser on another PC on your LAN and you can then go to the "Devices" page to set up disks, and to the "Users", "Shares", and "Settings" pages to set various options.

There is a TON of user contributed content in the wiki.  Take advantage of everyone's experiences.  You'll find the answers to lots of questions there.

Good luck, and enjoy your server...

what motherboard are you using?

it sounds like you might be getting the same error that a few others are getting see here http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=2159.0

Can you see error messages on the screen like

line 18 : blah blah  no such file or directory

line 19 : blah blah  no such file or directory

cheers

PS you can use shift and page up to go back through screen boot messages
