[SOLVED]New Server Hardware Recommendation

Featured Replies

[EDIT] 10/08/2012

I changed the motherboard, but it still did not work, so even more troubleshooting later only to find that one of the memory sticks was bad... On the positive side, once it booted up, unRAID recognized the new motherboard without an issue, and I just had to re-assign some of the drives, and the array came right up. It just works!

I have had it! My server went down again, this is the third time it went off in recent months, each time the problem is a bit different, but I think the root cause is either the power supply, or the main-board of the server... I am looking for some recommendations to upgrade my system to make it more reliable and fault-tolerant (power outages, etc.) I am thinking of migrating all the drives to my 10-bay external HD array (may need to delete some data to make everything fit), and just use a small disk-less PC to run the unRAID server software, would that work? My current setup is as follows:

unRAID server 4.4.0

1 - 2TB parity drive

12 - 1TB data drives

1 - 10-bay hard disk array with eSATA I/O

1 - eSATA controller card

[EDIT] I just re-read the Wiki, from the motherboard requirements, it seems that some drives must be mounted within the server itself (MB needs a minimum of 6 SATA ports) , could someone please confirm this?

TIA,

Jaz

eSATA  runs at 3Gbps. This is fast enough to allow concurrent access of at most 2 drives without a performance penalty..
