Confusion about split levels

Featured Replies

Hey folks, finally got my unRAID server up and running. Now it's time to set it up and I'm a little bit confused on how to set it up in order to get what I want. I want to have 2 shares: Movies and TV Shows. They would look like this:

1                  Movies

            /                    \

2    SD Movies          HD Movies

            |                  /        \

3    .avi files        .mkv files  Movie series folder (Bond films, Bourne films, etc.)

                                                      |

4                                                .mkv files

1      TV Shows

              |

2      TV Show folder

              |

3      Season folder

              |

4      .avi or .mkv files

What would the ideal split level for this setup be? I currently have both shares set at high water allocation and split level 2. I should also add that I don't use any metadata files or images, just the movie files themselves. Any suggestions? Also, what happens when a new drive is added to the array? Is the user share setup replicated on the new drive? Thanks for your help!

Since I would rarely watch a movie right after another, I feel that I should set Movies to 4. I don't use metadata or image files so nothing really needs to be kept together or watched sequentially. For TV Shows, I'm thinking 3 is ideal, which would allow shows to be spread across disks while keeping seasons intact. Is that correct?

EDIT: Or am I adding an extra level for each? Should Movies be 3 and TV Shows be 2? When it comes to movies, the files can be anywhere. TV shows I want to keep seasons together.

2 looks fine for both.

Pick the last level that you want to split. For Movies, that means the SD Movies and HD Movies can be on multiple drives. Every directory below is contained on a single drive.

2 sounds perfect for TV Shows, but why not 3 for Movies? I'll rarely, if ever, watch movies one after another, so the prospect of having to spin up another drive is slim.

It doesn't much matter. 2 will keep a "movie series" together on a single disk. 3 will not.
