October 15, 201213 yr I just happened to check the unraid box tonight and found one of the drives redballed. I am trying to figure out 1. what happened, is it dead 2. how to get it online if it isnt or 3. how to replace it. I am attaching the smart report and syslog. I am running 5.0 - rc8a It appears that according to the smart report the drive is fine. When I power down and restart I see the drive being lit up... 1. Since it is redballed, should I just go ahead and replace it? These WD 3TB Green drives have been quite a disappointment. I ordered 23 for the server and 5 of them were bad and would not preclear. Now another one has issues. This is like a 25% failure rate.. 2. There is no data on this drive yet. It is in the middle of the array. I have replacements, do I just remove the failed drive and slide in a new one? I do have a parity disk on the array. Normally with hw raids in the past I just replace the drive and start up the raid and do a rebuild. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Tony Error.zip
October 15, 201213 yr i believe when you get a redball, it simply means a write failed to that drive. That doesn't mean that the drive is faulty. Could be a bad Sata Cable, bad power connector, if its in a tray/caddy, a bad connection there, etc, etc. (also check PSU rating is enough for the amount of drives you have) If you do want to replace it, you can do as you say, remove that drive and put in a new one. The server will boot and ask you to select the new drive to replace the old one and then will do a parity rebuild. The issue with that is, if the drive is fine, you will more than likely have the new drive redball as the actual cause hasn't been fixed.
October 15, 201213 yr Author It is in a Norco 4224 case. If memory does not fail me, I belive that I had one of the initial drives that failed to preclear in the same slot. I replaced it and the new drive precleared ok... I have a SeaSonic 1000 ps, I'll assume that I have enough power for the drives. I ran 3 power cables from the ps to the backplane, each cable powering 8 drives or 2 of the backplane cards. I'm going to pull out the drive tonight and preclear it on another pc to test it. I purchased a couple of extra WD green drives just in case I have failures. If it is the Norco, does anyone know how good they are at replacing the backplane cards?
