Help with Linux file permissions

Featured Replies

I recently built an ESXi server to host my unRAID server and that is working wonderfully so far.  I also planned to run some other VM's for some other functions including an Ubuntu VM.  Now I don't know much at all about Linux, but I wanted to take this opportunity to learn it some.  The whole file permissions and ownership has completely frustrated me.  I understand it on a very basic level, but in actual usage, it is kicking my butt.

I have set up a FreeNAS VM that I want to use to backup some of the critical stuff from my unRAID server.  Setting up an rsync server and client has confused me so I go the (probably not so) bright idea to use fstab to mount both the FreeNAS share and the unRAID share on the Ubuntu machine and just use a basic rsync command that will work on local folders.  The problem again is permissions.  When I ran the rsync command, a bunch of the directories were created, but empty and they showed a lock symbol in Ubuntu filer manager.  No files were ever copied and the verbose message showed a ton of errors saying "Permission Denied (13)".  When I look at the permissions of on of the locked, empty folders it created, it shows the user is 1001 and the group is 31.  I have the FreeNAS user for the share set to Guest (which has an ID of 1001) and the group is also set to Guest (which is ID 31).  I'm not sure why it used the ID's rather than the name, but I'm confused why it used Guest anyhow.  When I ran rsync I used the -a argument which I understood would preserver permissions and ownership.  I get that I have the share set to Guest, but I thought that was just fo user access whcih essentially meant anyone could access the files/fodlers.

I'm sure the above shows I am totally lost concerning permissions, but if someone could show me the light I would appreciate it.
