Second opinion on 2 diff computers..

Featured Replies

Been lurking here for a while so much info here but I want a second opinion on this. So basically I have a few extra computers in the house and looking to put one together as an unRaid machine. I was thinking of just using the second one and keeping the first as is, basically I just wanted to know if there were any compatibility issues I should avoid with either one of these... Since I couldn't find any info on the second motherboard except for an old Biostar page which has no info at all... My old gaming PC has the following:

MoBo: M4A79 Deluxe

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 940

RAM: 4gb GeIL RAM (DDR2-800)

GPU: GTX280

PSU: Corsair TX750

Case: HAF-932

That one has a little too much power for me to run 24/7 which I don't have to but if I can I would like to. and on the other hand I have a really old PC that's kind of been frankensteined together over the past 5-6 years adding/taking out as needed... It's current state...

MoBo: Biostar TA770+ A2 (Detected as A78XA-A2T so I'm not even sure..)

CPU: AMD 4200+ 64 X2

RAM: 2GB g-skill 1066

GPU: Zotac 8800GT

PSU: Rosewill Stallion Series RD500-2SB (500W)

Case: Thermaltake SViking VA4000BWS

If I have to buy some parts as well I wouldn't mind, although I'm trying to keep this as cheap/free as possible (for now... I do have plans for building a NAS specific PC down the road).  As of right now I don't have too much storage (2x2TB WD red's, 2xTB and 1x750gb not sure on brands atm) but I am thinking I may expand that down the road.

KCola,

Your Frankenstein PC probably is more than sufficient to run unRAID from a horsepower viewpoint.  The motherboard appears to have a Marvell 88E8056 ethernet chip and that one shows up as having a few issues on some of the tested boards http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Hardware_Compatibility  You have the kit on hand though so why not try it out?  You can put unRAID on a thumb drive and test it out for network functionality without even hooking up your HDD.

By the way, here's a few resources for that mobo:
