New build and the issues that always seem to appear

Featured Replies

Like many I'm sure, I've been waiting (and waiting) for release 5 to get out of beta. Instead of migrating to release 5 on one of the other servers, I simply built another. Same basic parts as my others, with plans to go to 14 3tb disks, and 39tb of capacity. Maybe only 36tb if dual parity makes it to final.

Today, the 4 pin ATX extender arrived so I was finally able to plug that cable into the mobo while routing it behind everything. Press the power button, and nothing but a couple degrees of spin on the case fans.

ugh

I start looking over everything. 24 pin ATX cable looks and feels fine. Switch connectors on the mobo look fine. I remove the 4 pin ATX extender and try again. Nothing. Grab my old Antec SL350 I've had since about 2004. Bam. Everything spins up AS IT SHOULD. One thing of note: the insertion of the 24 pin cable into the mobo was super easy with the old PSU. Slight press and an audible click. I never heard the click into the mobo with the new PSU. It took A LOT of force to hear a click even into the PSU. More force than I like. There's really nothing on a computer that needs to be forced, IMO.

The Offender: OCZ ZT Series 650W.

On Monday, I'm going to take it down to my favorite shop and have him run some tests. If it's hosed, back to amazon it goes as a defective unit.

In other news, release 5.0-rc8a looks amazing! I'm starting with a 3tb parity, and a couple old 500gb data disks. Let's see what all the fuss is about. I tried to boot up with an Intel Pro NIC, but couldn't get an IP. I switched to the onboard Realtek NIC and have had no issues.

driver: r8168
version: 8.032.00-NAPI
firmware-version:
bus-info: 0000:03:00.0

In other news, part 2: I toured Lockheed Martin's NOC/SOC and datacenter today. This is in Richland, WA. The tech club at school set it up for about ten of us. What a cool experience.

Definitely feeling lucky to get to see that.

The new PSU arrived today. It installed like a dream, mainly due to the 24 pin and 4 pin cables being so damn long. No extensions needed.
