December 3, 201213 yr I noticed while looking over the webGUI today that one of the balls next to one of my hard drives was blinking red. I read through this wiki page: http://lime-technology.com/wiki/index.php/Troubleshooting#What_do_I_do_if_I_get_a_red_ball_next_to_a_hard_disk.3F, and followed the instructions. I attached the smart.txt file here. It looks like the drive has failed, but I just want to be sure before I replace it. I guess this means my parity has been acting as this disk, and that my array isn't really protected right now? I'm hoping somebody more experienced than me can make some sense of this, and guide me in the right direction. I do have a brand new 2TB drive waiting to be installed right now. Thanks in advance for any help. Matt smart.txt
December 3, 201213 yr Author So do I simply follow the instructions to replace it? Is there a chance that it has been dead for some time, and some of my new data will be lost when I replace the drive? This is one of 3 data drives. I thought I read somewhere that once a data drive dies, the parity drive acts as a data drive, and any new data saved from that point forward might not be recoverable during a drive swap. December 4, 201213 yr Author Should I update the firmware on my Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB drive before I do a preclear? I downloaded and installed unmenu, screen, and mail & ssmtp. I'm about to pull the trigger on the preclear using putty and screen, but I just wanted to be sure about the firmware. Here is what I have: Device Model: ST2000DL003-9VT166 Serial Number: 5YD6**** Firmware Version: CC98 User Capacity: 2,000,398,934,016 bytes I went to Seagate's website, and it looks like the current firmware for this model is CC32. It doesn't say anywhere on the unraid compatibility page that it is absolutely necessary to update the firmware on this particular drive, though. What do you think? Thanks, Matt
December 5, 201213 yr Author I went ahead and pulled the trigger last night without updating the firmware. I couldn't find any good reason to update it when I did a Google search. The email feature is pretty cool. I was getting progress updates while at work. It's finished with the preclear, and doing the post-read now. The elapsed time is 20 hours, and the post-read is 72% complete. Looks like it will probably take about 24 hours total, just like the wiki said. I wonder about how long it will take to rebuild the data once the preclear is done?
December 6, 201213 yr Author UNRAID IS AWESOME!! This is the first time I've had to actually use Unraid to replace a bad drive. It was simple, and took less than 40 hours to do. 24 hours to preclear a new 2TB drive, 7.5 hours to rebuild the drive, and 7.5 hours to check parity. There were zero errors, and all my data is intact. I can't imagine not having parity now. It was WELL worth the license fee to have all my data rebuilt so easily. The drive was just over 2 years into a 3 year warranty from Seagate, and the online RMA process was simple. Seagate recommended using their drive check tool, which I did. It showed that the drive was dead, but they didn't even ask for the results of the test to get the RMA process going. All in all, I'm super pleased to know that my data is safe, as long as one drive fails at a time. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to all the people who contributed to this software, and the people who take the time to help us figure this stuff out!!!
