Memory as cache ?

Featured Replies

Is it possible to cache the most requested files in ram ? for faster access ? i'm thinking of users of smaller files like mp3, pictures etc ...

you could let unraid decide howmuch cache to use ... ram is cheap these days...

Most of the newer motherboard have too much ram fitted to run unraid... what if we would do something useful with it ?

We should backup that data on a regular base with cron... en reload it into the ram every reboot.  ;D

What's the purpose?  Are you transferring files or streaming?  If the latter, cache for music won't be any faster since unraid can easily support 100% speed requirements already.  It's like thinking that a 16X CD drive will play music faster than a 1X.  It will transfer files faster, but not play the music any faster.

For pictures, they are so small that it would be a non-issue.

I can see the need to cache much larger files, but then we run into addressable memory limits.

The entire OS loads onto a ramdisk.  There is enough room for you to put some stuff there.

If you have some files that you want to be available even when a disk is spun down. this might have some benefit.

Otherwise, I agree with Billped.

It's possible, The root filesystem is in RAM. However, it also depends on how much the file is used.

If you have allot of ram 4G and over, then the buffer cache should be sufficient for files accessed often.

I.E. Unless you have a very busy torrent client like me.

As far as files permanently in ram. I have a few that I run off the ram disk because they get updated so often.

(NAGIOS Logs, Plus a consolidated syslog host).

I plan to move these to my Gigabyte- I-RAM drive in the next week or so.

If you have files from some daemon that are constantly read/written to, then it may be worthwhile to put them in ram.

Other then that, for the average user, allot of ram is the way to go.
