December 12, 201213 yr Hi guys, So I've been having problems with my unraid server lately. Anyway, two days ago we had a power outage. I later started the server and let it do a parity check (non correcting) and then went to bed. Yesterday I checked and saw a red dot next to my parity drive, and the error count box next to it was showing 700 and something errors. Anyway, I thought I'll diagnose this later. Today I stopped the array and now I see the parity drive as unassigned, I'm not sure what is exactly wrong, I checked the SMART status of that drive not long ago and it was fine. There was another drive that had problems which I intended to replace. I don't know if I should do that now so I thought I should consult you first. The server wasn't turned off after those events so I captured a syslog which I attached. Can you let me know what should I do next to fix this problem ? Thanks syslog-2012-12-12-1704.txt.zip
December 12, 201213 yr Post SMART reports for the parity disk and the other drive mentioned. Check all SMART reports for Current_Pending_Sector/RAW_VALUE not zero.
December 12, 201213 yr Author Post SMART reports for the parity disk and the other drive mentioned. Check all SMART reports for Current_Pending_Sector/RAW_VALUE not zero. The parity disk isn't showing up. When I tried the command anyway this is what I got : Smartctl: Device Read Identity Failed (not an ATA/ATAPI device) A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options. Also I checked the SMART reports for all the drives and all of them are showing zero. On my last thread I did what you said and reconstructed the drive that was showing the errors, which I'm sure wasn't the parity drive. How can I get it to show up ? Should I reboot ?
December 13, 201213 yr Author Ok I rebooted anyway and the parity drive showed up. Here's the SMART report. It does show pending sectors. Should I replace it ? It's also showing up as a new parity drive for some reason. Didn't start the array yet. Please let me know how I should proceed. Thank you, smart.txt

Thank you, If it is showing up as new, then the prior boot saw it missing. If that is the case, before you do anything more, stop the array, power down, and re-seat the cables to that drive. It is as likely as anything something is intermittent. If in a drive tray, re-seat it too. When you re-start the array it will re-calculate parity, as if it is the first time, since it thinks the disk is new. That should re-allocate any sectors pending re-allocation. Once the parity calc is complete, perform a parity check. This will ensure what you've written can be read and will allow the disk to detect any additional un-readable sectors. If additional un-readable sectors show, the disk is a good candidate for replacement. Keep an eye on the disk, it has 82 sectors pending re-allocation. At the end of the parity calc (and subsequent parity check) it should have 0 pending re-alllocation. Joe L.
