December 17, 201213 yr Pros, I am in the process of creating a "Purchase Order" to get approval to build an unRAID box for our startup. Here are the issues I would like to know in advance; We have the following drives available to be used in the Build but need to know what is or is not possible 8 x WD Green (3tb) 7 x Seagate (2tb) 5 x mixed (1 and 1.5tb) Our goal will be to build something with the NORCO 24 or 20 bay with a parts/build list as current as possible a) What would you do if you had this these drives and wanted to re-use them somehow. b) Over 2013 we would like to pull out the smaller 1 and 1.5tb drives and swap with 3tb WD Red or improve as we get more money Thank you in advance for your advice
December 17, 201213 yr One of the 3tb disks as parity, running one of the 5.x unRAID releases. Just remember that any release after 4.7 is still in beta. All other disks as data. A cache disk might be needed to help transfer get the files to the server at a faster speed. But a small SSD would likely be best for that. The Norco case should have plenty of room. For disk replacements, be prepared to pre-clear the disk somewhere else, then swap out the smaller disk on a weekend to let the disk rebuild run without added requirements from writing/reading data. Just a minor thought. If you would rather use a final version (instead of beta) of the software, I think you can still use the 3tb disks, but you won't get their full capacity.
December 18, 201213 yr Author Jeff, Really appreciate the reply - I think I will go for the beta release as the forums / support seem to be quite good here. Maybe I can get the box approved before xmas break Thanks, Mike T
December 18, 201213 yr Author Jeff or Others with a NORCO 4220 What is the dB or the lowest noise of your current boxes? While most of us in the office worked in Data Centers (alot of Whitenoise) it would be nice to get it as quite as possible. Any ideas or tips / lessons learned?

You can get a Morco down to desktop noise levels with Noctua fans while maintaining cool temps. My drives are the noisiest part of my servers. Parts I used are in my Sig.
