Shutdown after x amount of inactivity ?

Featured Replies

I just set up my first unraid box and so far all is well and it seems like I got everything working like I want to.  Now I am looking for a solution that will cause the unraid box to do a clean powerdown after 15 min of inactivity.  I tried simple tools, but my mobo DOES NOT support S3 sleep.  And it will power on via WOL command after a clean powerdown.  So since I will only be turning on the server when viewing media, a clean powerdown automatically should be all I need.

I am very surprised how easily I got unraid running.  This is my first time ever dealing with Linux and its been great.  I still have my WHS v1 box running, but will probably only use that for backing up PC's if Unraid works as well as advertised.

In particular reason you want your machine to shutdown down after 15 minutes of no use? Most of us just have our drives goto sleep and when we need are media our intended drives spin up.

Why not just turn your machine off say at bed time and turn it on when you plan on using it. If I told my wife she could only access media or our files at certain times she would smack me silly. LOL

Mostly because of noise and location.  The box is very loud with three super micro 5 bay slots and just those three fans are very loud.

The box is also away from where I normally am so its not easy for me to just walk to turn it on or off.

I might just get a new mobo that supports S3 sleep, but right now if I could just get it to power down, that would be fine.

I guess you could create a script that checks if the all the disks are spun down. And if so call the clean powerdown script.

SimpleFeatures has a gui that allows you to set when you want your server to sleep. You can run commands before/after sleep, as well as check for external network activity (as well as requiring sleep after all drives have been spun down after a certain period of time).

That sounds like it would work, but my mobo does not support S3 sleep.

asr10 user I am in the same shoes. I got a Supermicro MB, however it does not support S3 Sleep. I mainily bought a SMC MB for the IPMI functionality. I have SF installed but have not had any luck with sleep. I would be interested if you find a solution. I also use my unraid as my media cloud.

Be aware that even if S3 sleep works with one kernel iteration it is entirely possible that a new kernel will break it.  Buying a new motherboard solely on the basis of S3 sleep functionality could easily lead to buyers remorse.  I've had motherboards where BIOS updates completely broke S3 sleep, and reverting to earlier versions allowed it to work again.  I'd be wary of using S3 sleep as your main criteria for buying.
