January 29, 201313 yr Hi guys, first of all I would like to say sorry for the stupid questions I may ask. I`m a newbie concerning the unRaid server (soft- and hardware). A friend of mine built me up the unRaid server almost 2 years ago and everything worked fine till now because I have to upgrade several things (hard drive and controller card). Since my friend moved away a few month ago I have to do it on my own. Here is what I did so far: Yesterday I made an software upgrade from 4.7 to 5.0 rc-10. Thanks for the good explaination and guidance on the website. That works perfect. In addition I changed the parity hard drive from 2TB to 3TB. That also works perfect. My problem now is that my mainboard (Supermicro X7SPA-HF) doesn`t have any slots left for the new hard drives. To solve this I bought the Adaptec 2241000-R PCI Express x4 SATA II (3.0Gb/s) 1430SA SGL controller card. As I have read on the Internet it is just plug & play, right? Here is what I did: I plugged the controller card into the mainboard and it seems to work since there were several lights flashing. On the next step I put the old 2TB parity hard drive in one of the new slots of the controller card. The hard drive also seems to work since there is a blue light flashing at the tower were the hard drive is located. Then I booted the server and opened the web gui but I can not find the new 2TB hard drive. Could you please tell me what I have done wrong? Here are some questions I have: 1. Is there a possiblity to see if the controller card is working correct? 2. Is it possible to use the old parity hard drive as a "normal" hard drive? Do I have to formate it before using it as a "normal" hard drive? 3. Concering the controller card do I have to change something in bios? I would be very thankful if you could give me a step by step explaination since I really don`t know what to do right now. Thank you in advance. fastb@ll
January 29, 201313 yr Enter the controller BIOS setup. The proper keys to press should appear briefly during startup. The card has its own BIOS that is distinct from the Motherboard BIOS. The controller card will not use the same key(s) as the motherboard BIOS, e.g, the motherboard requires 'DEL' and the controller card requires "^M". These are just examples; look for the correct key to appear during startup. Don't enter the motherboard BIOS by mistake. Does the attached hard drive appear in the BIOS? Make sure that the card is NOT configured for RAID. You want JBOD or direct disk access. You can safely reset the computer BEFORE unRAID starts, if needed. Also, consider returning the card and getting a Supermicro AOC-SASLP-MV8. The Supermicro card is about the same price and supports up to 8 drives.
January 31, 201313 yr Author Thank you for your help! The Bios of the controller card was configured wrong. I changed it as you said and now everything is working fine. Once again, Thank you!
