Home networking around unraid server for dummies..

Featured Replies

I'm the first to admit i'm completely in the dark when it comes to networking.  Unfortunately, I've never really looked beyond setting the basic wireless network up at home and getting the wireless sorted, so when it comes to networking, i'm pretty much in the dark.

I recently (last week!) built an unraid server and got it online, and I have a HTPC running Openelec version of XBMC, and various other devices I'm looking to stream to around the house.

Here's my total list of hardware that I want to connect and/or have at my disposal to help figure this thing out:

- Netgear N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router - WNDR4000 http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-WNDR4000-Gigabit-Wireless-Router/dp/B004PA2B6C

This is my old router that I was using in conjunction with a cable (only( modem in our previous home.  Moving to our new house, we have not used this router as we had no need with the inclusion of the wireless model/router that we got from AT&T

- AT&T Uverse Pace 3801HGV - This is the AT&T Wireless Gateway, I can't find much documentation on it that's not on AT&T forums and related to troubleshooting.

- Netgear GS608 v3 8 Port Gigabit Switch - http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-GS608NA-Giga-Switch-8Port/dp/B0002A9RFM

And devices I am looking to network are:

- unRaid server! - Built last week!  Inly have 2 drives in plus Parity drive, but will be buying plus license and loading up more drives (2x more to load shortly, one of which may become cache...) in the vey near future.

- Desktop PC - A build of my own, connected wirelessly (odd I know), connected with one of these: http://www.shop-fun.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=20271  Will be installing xbmc live to this computer soonish and building a library based on server content.

- HTPC- Zotac Nano AD10 running Openelec XBMC.  For whatever reasons I have not been able to get wireless working on this thing through the XBMC interface, will probably try again as part of this project. It is connected by LAN cable currently.

- ASUS Transformer Infinity Tablet (running on whatever the latest verison of Android is) *

- Samsung Nexus S Phone.*

- Apple iPhone 5.*

* These 3 I am wirelessly accessing the Unraid server using ES File Explorer so no big issues with that.

So my current setup is attached (and not ideal), but since both the Server & the HTPC are wired connections for Ethernet and feeding off the Wireless Gateway, and I have not been able to get the HTPC to *see* the unRAID Box.  I can however, see the unRAID box from all other devices on the network.

Additionally, I am conscious that the Wireless Gateway only has 10/100 ports on, so will throttle speed on any wired connection (if it can in fact be seen directly on wired connections passed through the gateway.)

I want to integrate my other devices, so any advice on the best way to integrate either the switch, the router, or both, would be greatly appreciated!

Probably the simplest thing to do is connect the Gigabit Switch to the AT&T and connect everything else that needs a wired connection to the switch. Try that and come back if you need any more help.

As for the wireless desktop not seeing the other computers, can you ping them by IP? Is everything using DHCP from the AT&T?

Here's the link to the manual of the gateway. It appears there's an ethernet port that isn't used, possibly marked DSL or something like that. See the red marked connector on page 3. I can see you having trouble if you've plugged the server or HTPC into there.

Do like trurl posted and put the wired stuff on the switch with the switch connected to the gateway but only if you decide you want faster transfer speeds between the HTPC and the unRAID server. If the HTPC is only streaming movies off the unRAID server then having the switch really is of little benefit and will just be another device using power and being a cause for possible future issues.

You don't presently need your old router.

I would first follow the recommendations of lionelhutz and trurl to get things fully working.

If you then have issues with wifi range and speed with the AT&T wireless gateway you might try connecting your old Netgear 750 to the AT&T gateway and using it, the 750, both for wifi and for any directly connected ports. In that case the only connection to the AT&T would be the connection to the 750 uplink port (internet yellow port). If possible, ideally the AT&T should be in bridge mode and have its wifi radio disabled. You would then be using the AT&T only as a modem and the rest of the configuration could be as in your previous home.

If you are loading bulk media to the unraid server you definitely would like to have  a wired 1 Gb  connection between the source pc/server and the unraid server.
