Setting up Avahi

Featured Replies

I finished building an unRAID server and it's working great from my PC's.  I can't seem to get my MAC to see it and have seen in a previous thread that people use Avahi so the MAC can recognize it from the finder window.  Can someone get explicit directions on how to install and set this up on unRAID?

Thanks.

You are not alone in wanting avahi support. I tried but there are various dependencies required that are not available on unraid. The community may help, but I think that most of the hackers out there don't have an immediate need for avahi and are looking to expand other capabilities first (see most current threads on modding).

Ideally, Tom will include the support in a near release since this is about basic connectivity for mac users (no doubt there is an application for zeroconf in the linux and windows world as well). It doesn't require a lot of space on the flash drive or ram. It would need testing, but we could perhaps help with that.

Of course we can mount the shares already, but it isn't seamless. "It just works" is missing. Mac users have been holding out for afp support for a long time. Personally, I don't feel that afp is that important and it won't work with time machine without hacks. Smb works and is fast enough and there is a large community working on it.

What in particular is missing that Avahi is dependent on?

dbus, libdaemon and some other files that are in the gcc package that I don't recall.
