Shares - Read Only help - SOLVED

Featured Replies

For some reason really struggling with this one.

I'm running 5.0-rc8a Server Plus.

Have been all over the forums and found quite a number of threads on how to accomplish what I want, but none seem to match what I see when logged into the GUI.

Many of the threads seem to point to how this is done in previous version of unRAID.

Here is the ask in it's most basic form:

I have XBMC for HTPC front end on 3 raspberry Pi's and a couple of Windows PC's

I would like to make a number of my shares "read only" and create a user with password protection (myself) to manage the content of the shares (adding or deleting files) from a number of PC's where I have mapped the shares

How do I do this in 5.0-rc8a?

I have the following shares set up in unRAID

Media

Music

Photos

PC Backup

Videos (Family)

I've attached a screen capture for the options I see for restricting access.

I also tried to set up a new user (myself.) I was able to input my information including user name and password and hit apply, but I never see the user listed??

Can someone walk me through the directions?

Sorry for the noob level detail. This seems like it should be a simple setup, but I must be missing something.

Thanks

If you aren't getting the user added it might be because of the username character restrictions

If you manage to get users added, then you will be able to choose Security: Secure and specify which users have read/write and which only have read access.

Thanks trurl.

Will try it again and ref the restrictions in your post.

OK - Well that was it for setting up a new user. Good call!

I would like to keep the access very simple and avoid the need to create user names and passwords except for the one I've set up for myself.

I read in a couple of threads a setup where the shares were visible and readable by all users but could only be read and written to by one user (in this case myself)

I've attached a screen shot of my new user "admin" and would like any other device / uer that is mapped to the share to find and read the contents but not be able to modify (write).

What is the simple way to accomplish?

Ideally, no other device / user would need to enter any username or password to use the contents of the share (movies, music, pictures, etc..)

I think this can be done my setting access to read only and have "admin" as an exception?

OK,

So I've setup the following: (see attached)

Will this setup provide "read only" access to every who is mapped to the share and "read / write" access to "admin" only?

Yes I think that should work.

More detailed explanation of share security setting can be read here.

That seems to have done the trick.

All shares a able to read / play media files from the shares.

Only remaining snag is that I'm not being prompted for a password from the PC that I intend to manage the share content from.

When I try to add / delete from the share it get a permissions error. I'm sure it's straight forward, but how do I setup a prompt for the password? I happen to be running Vista on the device that most of the content management will take place on.

Will read through the last link you provided as well.

Thanks
