First unraid build - are my parts compatible?

Featured Replies

I'm looking to transition from an 18tb WHS v1 server that uses complete file duplication (so about 9tb available) to a parity system, like Unraid.

I want to start a 15-drive unraid build and would like my parts list looked over to make sure I'm not buying anything known to be troublesome with Unraid.  I only want it to serve files, as I have other HTPCs that can run sab and plex.

I also want 8 sata ports on the main board to start.  Here's what I'm thinking:

BIOSTAR Hi-Fi A85W FM2 AMD A85X (Hudson D4) SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard

AMD A4-5300 Trinity 3.4GHz (3.6GHz Turbo) Socket FM2 65W Dual-Core Desktop APU

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600)

Rosewill RSV-L4500 15-bay case (I don't need hot swap and don't mind getting into the case to fix drive issues)

CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W power supply

Alternately, I could go with an Intel setup, though I've read the onboard NIC in the ASrock board is troublesome:

ASRock H77 Pro4/MVP LGA 1155 Intel H77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Intel Celeron G530 Sandy Bridge 2.4GHz

Thoughts?  Any compelling reason to go with the Intel setup over AMD?  Thank you in advance; the support this forum provides is amazing.

The A4-5300 is overkill for just file serving.  An AMD Sempron 145 is more than adequate for the job.  The A4-3300 would be able to do the job.  Your problem would be to find a motherboard for the Sempron that has both video and enough PCI express slots for expansion card(s) to provide the extra SATA ports.  You also don't need 6Gb/s SATA  ports unless those are 'free'-- don't make these a priority in your selection process  as there is not a mechanical HD made today that can saturate a SATA II port!
