My first reb ball

Featured Replies

Hi,

after 4 years of 24/7 use I got my first disabled disk. My array contains 11 data disks ranging from 1TB to 3TB in size. The hard drive that failed is of the first I installed 4 years ago. I tried to get a smart report, but the disk does not respond to any SMART commands. So I'm thinking it's really dead and it's not just a cable issue.

I have attached the syslog. What do you think? I have a replacement on the way.

Thanks.

If you don't have a replacement to use right away I'd keep the machine off until it arrives.

Thank you for the advice. As a precaution, I will disconnect all the other hard drives while the replacement drive is precleared. I don't suppose that will create problems when I restart the array with all the drives switched on?

Power cycle the system and then try to get a SMART report.

Update:

The power cycle did not yield a smart report. I went ahead and replaced the drive anyway. The old drive makes noise when I shake it gently. Sounds like a loose piece inside.

Anyway, the data reconstruct completed successfully. The reason why I bought unRaid 4 years ago happened, survive a failing drive without data loss. The replacement went smoothly. Thanks unRaid!
