[SOLVED] Best way to transition drives to different server

Featured Replies

Have my new server configured and running- consolidating unraid/sabnzbd/sickbeard/couchpotato, and I'm ready to transition my drives from my original machine.  Both machines are currently running the latest unraid.  At the moment, my new server has 1 parity drive, 1 data drive & 1 cache drive

Am I correct in presuming I can simply:

  • Stop my original server
  • Stop my new server
  • Remove my original server's data drives
  • Insert the original data drives into new server
  • Start new server
  • Rebuild parity
  • Preclear my original server's parity drive for use as a spare

[*]Do the drives have to be re-added in the same sequence as installed in my original server?

[*]Do I need to re-create all the shares currently on my original server before transitioning the drives?

If I've missed anything- or am about to do something foolish, I'd appreciate a heads-up.

Thanks!

1. other than re-assigning the parity drive to the "logical" parity slot in the array, and the "cache" drive to the "logical" cache slot in the array (if you wish to re-use them),  the data drives can be in any sequence.

2. no

BE VERY CAREFUL...  If you've already established parity you MUST set a new disk configuration prior to adding in the old drives and before starting the new configuration, otherwise, the old disks will be zeroed.

And by, "set a new disk configuration prior to adding in the old drives", I presume you mean

Insert the new drives.

Turn on machine.

Go to unraid's main screen.  (which is still offline)

Add the drives into successive drive slots

and finally START the array

No, that will probably zero the newly added drives.

You must go to "Utils->New-Configuration" and set a new disk configuration while the array is stopped and BEFORE starting it with the newly assigned drives.

Thanks for that warning, Joe.  I'll be working on my system this evening and will be sure to follow your advice.

One last question- In choosing NEW CONFIG, will I lose my Sickbeard/Sabnzbd/CouchPotato installs (which are currently humming right along, thanks to plugins)  ???

Install directory:  /usr/local/sabnzbd

Data directory:  /mnt/cache/appdata/sabnzbd

[glow=red,2,300]FINAL UPDATE: [/glow] Nobody ever replied to this question, so I took a bunch of notes, crossed my fingers, and moved the drives this evening.  For anyone that might, someday, stumble upon this question- NO, you do not lose your concurrently running Sabnzbd/Sickbeard/CouchPotato installs.
