Intermittent drop outs and lock ups

Featured Replies

I just upgraded my mother boar to the AB9 Pro, everything seem to be working.  My old mother board was AMD based.  I was having intermittent drop out with the old boar, so I thought I would change the board to start the trouble shooting process.  I am still having problems, I have attached my sys log file.  Maybe someone could take a look and steer me in the right direction.  When I start a move it will freeze and lock up, if I try to brows my movies through explorer after the lock up it will take 30 to 60 seconds before I can access the files.  After this sometime the movie will play all the way through sometime not.

Thanks for taking a look.

Dave,

The syslog is perfect, does not show any issues at all.  It only covers the boot up, and the telnet in, about 12 minutes later.  If you captured this *after* the lockups, then the problem must be elsewhere.  If you captured the syslog as soon as you telneted in, try to force every bad problem and lockup you can, then capture the syslog after that, so we can see if any issues show up in the syslog.

Check the result of an ifconfig report, for dropouts, lost packets, etc.  If that is fine, then the network is physically OK, but may not be configured correctly or optimally.  Try the network related tips on the Improving unRAID Performance page, especially the nameserver & hosts file tip.

Also determine exactly what is locked up, the Windows machine in general, the unRAID server, the explorer only, the media player only, etc.  When you lose access to your movies, can you access them fine from another machine?

Thanks for taking a look.  I made that syslog after a lock up.  I got it to lock up again and did as you suggested and logged in on a different computer, and was able to see the server fine.  I did the ping test and it was 1 ml second, the ifconfig had no errors.  I modified my go file to include all the stuff you suggested.  The only thing I can think that may be an issue is the cad 5 wire, my house was pre wired with cad 5 and I am running gigabyte switches and router. I do have a lot of devices on my network, 5 Tivos, 1 sling box, 1 IP phone, 2 Tivx boxes, 4 computers, 2 HTPC running Vista Media Center with the My Movie plugin, the Unraid Server, and 2 Xboxes.

Thanks,

I had a system that would lockup and drop out. After hours of testing i could never get any logs to show anything.

I finally decided it was to much like hard work and got an official motherboard. Never had a single issue since.

I say this to add a real life example of when syslog (or any log) doesnt always help.

After modifying the go file, did you reboot the unRAID server?  (just trying to be thorough)

Although Cat5 could be an issue (for gigabit, Cat5e or Cat6 is recommended), I would have expected to see problems in the ifconfig report.

Also take a look for a misconfigured station, conflicting IP.  Somewhere, there is a report of a user who had strange problems, inconsistency (can't remember the exact symptoms), and it turned out that he had made changes in the past with the static IP's, where 2 different stations would now occasionally get the same IP.  Try updating your network design map, who's at what IP and MAC.  Also check the router logs for anomalies.

The fact that the unRAID server was working fine from another station would partially exonerate your unRAID server, but network issues can be complicated.  It could still be an issue with the viewing station.
