November 27, 200817 yr Hello, I'm new to this forum and I'm currently doing reserach to build my first unRAID system. I'm looking at the ASUS P5B-VM SE which is slighly different then the DO model. The DO model is discontinued and difficult to find. I want to purchase all my stuff on Newegg and they don't sell the DO model anymore. Does unRAID support the SE model and are there any disadvantages of using the SE vs DO mobo? Thanks, Scott
November 27, 200817 yr The way i see it your best to either use the official board i.e. the DO or if thats not available use one of the unofficial boards that are way more modern. Why? Because the only reason you would use a board this old really is that its tested to hell. The Abit PRO seems to have a good following here but the BIOS version is important. Most big manufacturer boards will work but you can see which boards the frequent members use in their forum sigs. A quick forum browse will give you a better feel. I say this alot but we really need a new official or at least unofficial board to recommend.
November 27, 200817 yr Author I've read through the forums regarding recommended motherboards and none seem to really fit my criteria from what I've seen. I'm looking for a motherboard with the following criteria: 1. Support at least 8 SATA II onboard 2. Has atleast two PCIe slots 3. Has a build-in VGA card 4. Is fairly new mobo that I can still purchase on Newegg 5. Has a proven track record working with UnRAID I'm planning on using Seagate 1.5TB HD and I want to be able to build out to 16 HD for the future. I'm looking to pair this with a Norco 4020. Anyone have a good recommendation?
November 27, 200817 yr All the current boards that have 8 SATA ports that I could find don't have VGA. A PCI vga card helps this issue and is what I use allowing the pci-e 16x slot to be used as well as the pci-e 1x on my board in the future. For the moment I'm using some Promise TX4's for the extra SATA ports but will go pci-e at some time in the future when a suitable option appears.
