July 4, 201313 yr Just spending some time today reading up on stuff, and ran across one future path of HDD technology, Shingled Magnetic Recording HDDs. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/07/29/hgst_smr/ Interesting stuff, could double HDD capacity, but at the "cost" of not being able to simply rewrite existing data quickly. Facebook seems interested in this technology for their "cold" storage. (basically WORM (write once, read many.)) Would also seem great for UnRaid, but absolutely unusable for traditional RAID. So my question is, do you think we'll see this sold via Newegg to consumers and storage enthusiasts, or will it only be offered to data center customers. I can see a retail HDD consumer returning this technology in a heart beat because they don't appreciate it's limits and how to utilize it effectively. Oh yeah, one more limitation, facebook says only one HDD in an enclosure using this technology can be spinning at a time, due to it's extreme sensitivity of vibration.
July 7, 201313 yr Shingled, SMR, (or the competing technologies HAMR/TAR) will be available to consumers. As you can see from the time of the article, SMR has not become the product in the timeframe required. The source for that article is not an engineer, but a business man selling his company. Several of the statements he makes are marketing fluff for his side and mud slinging at others. Basically these are competing technologies and when productized will be available like current offerings.
