noob question (transfer speed)

Featured Replies

hi,

I just started messing around with unraid on an old computer. I have an asrock ion 330 as an htpc and my work computer upstairs and an older quadcore desktop im using for unraid. I have a linksys 2700 router. everything has gigabit network capabilities and all run windows 7. I do not have a parity drive (yet) as i am just using an old sata ii 7200 drive for a test to see how unraid fits my needs.

When i transfer from either the desktop or htpc (which are hooked up with wireless n adapters (desktop is belkin usb htpc is built in realtek) i get speeds about 4mbps. when i hook up via ethernet on the htpc i get about 40-50mbps. i have my xbox right next to htpc and that is hardwired so i was able to hardwire the htpc for a test but i primarily use htpc as wireless. are these speeds to be expected? i played around with some registry settings to disable throttling. I read a few posts about transfer speed but most people have both ends via hardwire.

any suggestions for where to start looking for problems?

im moving soon and i dont think ill want to run cable all over the house. id like to get situated where the unraid box is hardwired to router and everything else is wireless.

thanks for any help and im not sure what info to give so just ask and ill respond asap.

Those numbers sound about right for average hardware.  Hard drive speed (source and destination), network interface, switching hardware, wireless router/AP, adapter card, and wireless environment all are factors that affect performance.  Edit: I'm assuming you mean 4 MB/s and 40-50MB/s.

If you connect everything wirelessly, you're going to be limited to wireless speeds, which will never be as good as wired connections;  AND will be even further throttled if you're doing multiple transfers at the same time, since they're all sharing a limited "pipe".    You can help this along by using all "N" adapters -- router, wireless adapters, etc. -- but the speeds you'll see are very dependent on the distance (the speed drops off rapidly as the distance increases).    You can try using better antennas on the adapters and/or router ... but it's very much a function of simply experimenting with placement and orientation to optimize the wireless transfer rates.

thanks for the replies. yes. i meant MB/s.

I guess ill just deal with the speeds then. i want to convert to wireless ac once i move but even then i am not transferring items very often. and read speeds are perfect with wireless N.

i do have to say that unraid with xbmc is pretty awesome. and i use plex for other devices in the house and cells. so definately is easy to use for someone whos never setup any type of server.  ;D
