Did my SuperMircro SAS card went bad?

Featured Replies

I was watching a movie, and all of the sudden it stopped playing.  I noticed some weird errors for my sas card.  System long attached.  Any input would be appreciated.

It looks as if a drive dropped offline for some reason.  You will probably have to reboot (or even better power off/on) your system to have any chance of getting the drive back online.

I would carefully check the cabling (power and SATA) in case one of them has worked loose.  I have also seen such symptoms if the SAS card is not correctly seated in its motherboard slot.

If it is the drive itself that is failing then a smartctl report for the drive in question might give an indication of this.

Well, I noticed that it was referring to the sdh drive, which in this case is my cache drive.  The drive is probably bad.  I took that drive out of my W7 PC due to having some issues with it such as freezing up, and at times giving the blue screen.

The only reason why I am using a cache drive is for Plex Media Server.  I'll remove the cache drive, and call it a day.

It does sound as if the drive might be suffering!  unRAID is likely to be fussier about drive quality than Windows so if Windows was having problems it is not surprising that unRAID might have problems.

If you want to try and see if there is any chance of using it in the future I would try running the manufacturers diagnostic tool against it (which can be done under Windows) and if that seems to work put it through a pre_clear cycle under unRAID.

It passed a pre_clear cycle before I started using it as a cache drive, but I had a feeling it might not last very long due to the prior issue.  I'm just going to get rid of it, and get another drive for cach.

I just received my new mobo AsRock Z77M, and now I am just waiting for my i5 CPU to get here.  I need to get some RAM for it as well, and it will be replacing my current MOBO / CPU set up.
