New setup preclear question

Featured Replies

So, I took ubuntu server for a spin and it causes way too many headaches in the longrun.  If I use unRAID again and my drives have been previously precleared but are no wformatted with ext4 do I need to preclear them again?

Unraid will zero out the disks by itself, but the array will not be available during this process. I'm not sure if you can do multiple drives at once.

The unraid process will be faster assuming you can do more than one drive at a time.

If you are setting up a new unRAID configuration then you do not need to pre-clear them again as unRAID does not do a pre-clear on a new configuration.

If you want to add the disks to an existing unRAID array then you DO need to preclear them again if you do not want the array off-line the whole time unRAID carries out its own preclear.  However as these are disks that have been previously precleared without issue you can run the pre-clear with the -n option which only carries out the main write pass which takes about 1/4 the time you would take without that option..
